The book by McDevit and Ormrod is aimed at bringing together theory and practice in order to show educators and those who care for infants, children, and adolescents how they can apply developmental theory and research in their daily practice. According to the theoretical framework by Vygotsky presented in this book, it states that the social interaction normally plays a vital role in the development of cognition. While focusing on the development of the two students, it is necessary to observe their speech. Vygotsky claims that the speech is a key psychological tool in the development of thinking; therefore, as children develop and age, their speech normally become complex (p.235). Therefore, observing the speech development in the children will enable then teacher to understand the development of the students. The book also states social interaction is essential in the development of children.  Therefore, while identifying the behavior of the students, it can be made easy through observing the environment where the child grow up that will likely influence the way they think and what they think.

This book also considers Vygotsky’s theory to explain about behavior in children development, through focusing on the role of culture and social interaction. In page 49, based on Vygotsky’s theory, the first years of a child are critical in their development because this is a period where their thought and language tend to be increasingly dependent. The theory also states that play is essential as it allows the child to stretch themselves cognitively.
