Introduction

COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or chronic obstructive pulmonary is a health progressive disease that makes it difficult for individuals to breath. It is a health condition that gets worse as time goes. In the current healthcare setting, the problem of preventing and controlling COPD infections has become a major challenge to most patients. Since the establishment of COPD, more than fifteen million people in US have been diagnosed with COPD. A decade ago, more than 40% of adults who suffered from poor pulmonary function didn’t know that they were suffering from COPD. Women and children are the most affected groups. Those who are unable to work as well as the aging population also face challenges in handling COPD healthcare condition. A good number of patients who seek health care services are at risk of getting hospital acquired infections. Since hospital acquired related infections have become a major problem, health care experts should be informed, on home care assessment and management to help patients take care of their health care conditions. This writing will examine the problem of COPD infections and discuss on the potential solution that should be implemented to address the selected problem.

Selected Problem

The identified problem in this case and requires solution is the problem of preventing and controlling COPD infections. There has been an increase in the level of infections that result from poor handling of COPD healthcare condition for patient staying at home. Health care experts have failed to improve the quality of patients and the issue of having repeated clients because of COPD exacerbation. The rate at which COPD health care infection is developing is high despite the regulations and policies that are set by healthcare facilities, (Taylor et al., 2005).

It is a serious health care concern both to the healthcare providers and to the individual patients. Study shows that this situation puts some financial problems on the patient’s family and to the healthcare facility. A good amount of money is used to cater for bills that result from COPD infections, which can be prevented. When a person acquires COPD infections, he goes to the hospital for treatment and, as a result, he faces hospital bills. According to CDC results, there are some patients who die due to COPD infections. There are several negative situations that result from lack of proper know-how on how to handle and respond to problems related to COPD infections.

Potential Solution

In order to handle the above health care issues, professionals in nursing should get an education and work with the patient to ensure they have established better ways of preventing COPD infections when they are at home. The proposed solution for the said challenge is to develop and implement an evidence-based education programs for health care experts. These programs will team then on how to educate patients recognize and prevent COPD infections when they are at home. Health care experts should be educated on the major areas of clinical elements that will help train patients on how to take care of themselves in times of sickness in order to prevent more infections from affecting their health conditions, (Vest et al., 2011).

The appropriate way to eliminate and reduce COPD infections in the health care setting is by developing an educational program that will have different educational and training sessions both to nurses and to the patients. Nurses should be trained and educated on prevention practices so as to assist patients take the right measure in handling their health conditions. The goal of nurse training program is to equip patients and nurses with the appropriate information that is required to prevent any form of infection. Educated nurses will help patients manage to control and eliminate any possible causes of COPD infections, (Upton et al., 2010).

Conclusion

COPD infections and other health related problems have been a major challenge in the healthcare setting. Nurses have failed to educate patients on how to take care of their health issues. To eliminate COPD related infections in the health care system is by providing educational programs so as to alert nurses and patients on how to prevent COPD issues.
